Chapter 12 - The Subconscious Mind

‘You never can tell what a thought will do
In bringing you hate or love -
For thoughts are things, and their airy wings

Whatever went out from your mind.’

In this chapter Hill gives us a deeper understanding of how the subconscious mind works. We have learnt that the subconscious mind responds best to desires backed by emotions. However the subconscious mind responds just as easily whether they are positive or negative emotions.

Now Hill gives us ‘The Seven Major Positive Emotions’ and ‘The Seven Major Negative Emotions’. These are:

Positive Emotions:

Romance and

Negative Emotions:

Superstition and

One thing you can choose – is how you feel. It is always your choice to react in a certain way. As you make the decision to dominate and impress your subconscious mind with more positive thoughts, you will begin to notice that these emotions become a part of your everyday life. ‘Like attracts Like.’

When you feel a negative emotion, become aware of it, and choose to react differently. Eventually, the ability to focus on the brighter side of life will become a habit and start to manifest in all aspects of your life.

It does take practice, but awareness is the first step!

Hi Jullieanne,
This so true! When these incidents have occurred with my son this week. Instantly fear stepped into mind. Instantly I began to feel afraid and nervous. Is he alright? Did he get into a fight and that's why he is hurt? Should I be angry and say "If you came with me, this wouldn't have happened." But we didn't approach him this way. I began to know that he was alright because he was able to speak to me. We didn't show anger towards him or punish him because the 12 stitches and trip to the emergency room was punishment for all. We showed care and love towards him and he felt safe and loved. This moved us toward repairing the situation. Thanks for bringing that to light.

I love the poem at the beginning of this post.

I heard recently - Only you can control your attitude. Your attitue is directly linked to your success. Therefore only you can control your success.

Faith and Fear are opposing spiritual forces. When we are responding to fear we can't act in faith.

Just two thoughts. Have a blessed evening.

You are so right. Napoleon Hill goes on to explain that negative and positive emotions cannot dominate the mind at the same time. It has to be one or the other... and that is where you get to choose.
