Breaking Free from the Pain-Body


‘The beginning of freedom from the pain-body lies first of all in the realization that you have a pain body. Then, more important, in your ability to stay present enough, alert enough, to notice the pain-body in yourself as a heavy influx of negative emotion when it becomes active.’

Taking the time to recognize when we are reacting unconsciously or being triggered by our pain bodies is the first step toward breaking free from it.

Tolle explains that when we react from the pain body we are reacting unconsciously. We are taken over by the power of the pain body and feeding it the energy that it thrives on.

Take an instance for example when you are in a heated argument and say something terrible and a few hours later you find yourself asking ‘Why did I say that?’, ‘I didn’t mean that’, ‘That is not what I really think.’ It can be quite complex trying to figure out where this attitude comes from. We can even find ourselves thinking ‘That was completely out of character.’

Tolle agrees that when we react from the pain-body we are outside of ourselves. We are acting unconsciously.

So should we be responsible for our actions when we act this way? If we are truly outside of ourselves and unaware of what we are doing, how can we take responsibility for something we have no control over?

By living consciously, and by becoming aware of the triggers that activate your pain-body, you can become aware of when you are starting to behave unconsciously and instead choose to disidentify with your pain-body.

Tolle goes on to explain that unhappiness can only be unhappiness when attached to emotion and an unhappy story. By choosing to remain conscious and in the present moment the situation cannot attach itself to a past situation or story and begin to activate your pain-body.

This is where you can take responsibility for your reactions from your pain-body.

Start to live consciously...

Allow yourself to feel the moment that you are in, instead of labelling it as bad or defending it and attaching it to your unhappy story. It is only a good or bad feeling, because you have labelled it to be that way. As soon as you start to resist the feeling, the pain-body activates. By allowing, you will feel the shift back into conscious living. Maybe this is what people mean when they say ‘Suffering brings enlightenment.’

Tolle puts it beautifully when he states;

‘The next step in human evolution is not inevitable, but for the first time in the history of our planet, it can be a conscious choice. Who is making that choice? You are. And who are you? Consciousness that has become conscious of itself.’
