Introduction to 'The Power of Now' by Eckhart Tolle

‘You are here to enable the divine purpose of the universe to unfold. That is how important you are!’

Eckhart Tolle

Tolle begins this prequel to ‘A New Earth’ with an insight into how his suffering brought about his acceptance of there being another way to live. He brings an excitement to suffering that can only be embraced with hindsight. Without an understanding of the necessity of suffering as a path to enlightenment, in the moment of the suffering there will be pain. However when you are able to accept suffering as being neither good nor bad your perception on your world and what you can do in it dramatically shifts.

This book is obviously not one to be rushed. Take the time to be focussed on the act of reading as a conscious decision to bring you into the present. Tolle offers ways that we can begin to become conscious of our surroundings and come into the ‘Now’ by using our routine duties as an opportunity to become present. By allowing ourselves to consider all senses during an activity we can bring a beautiful sense of peace and experience.

This brings us to the idea of ‘watching the thinker’. When you are able to create space between yourself and the experience, there is a shift in perception. When you are truly able to observe yourself doing your hair, or washing the dishes for instance it becomes a completely different experience.

This is Tolle’s simple message. Slow down. Become conscious. Become awre of the sights, sounds and smells that surround you. Release yourself from the constant talking in your mind. By doing this you will still think, but it will become constructive thinking.

The place to start is by recognizing that you are thinking. You can become conscious of your thoughts by pausing for a minute and listening to what you are thinking about. Incessant thinking will always bring you out of the present and cause you to be thinking of the past or the future. Sometimes our thoughts and stories have become automatic and this is a great exercise to put yourself in a position to question them.

This is a gentle introduction to ‘The Power of Now’ and a great place to begin.

Slow and conscious wins the race!

Happy Manifesting!
