Eternal and New

‘The secret of life is to ‘die before you die’ – and find that there is no death.’

Eckhart Tolle

I recently spoke to someone who is suffering from a terminal illness. She had asked why should she bother to study or save money or work towards building a better future for herself, in fact why should she do anything when she was not going to be here much longer?

I asked her ‘Why would anybody bother?’

Life is not about death. We will all pass – it is inevitable. Not knowing how long we have to experience this life is what keeps us going. There is a quiet sense of immortality that resides in us, although our focus on it is in different places.

Life is found in living, not in the expectation of inevitable death. If we all focussed on the fact that we would die at a certain age, how would it change our perspective on life and the way we live it?

When Tolle is speaking about death in the above quote he is initially speaking about the death of the ego. The ego distracts us from our true self and the present moment. When we are able to disidentify with the ego we are left with our true self – our eternal nature – and we come to realise that in truth there is no death of what is real – there cannot be, and anything that is not of our true self is not real.

This idea brings with it questions about perception, illusions and most significantly the illusion of separation. Past and future will maintain the illusion of separation from our true self which is why it is beneficial to consider the power that can be found in the present moment.

Whatever is eternal cannot die. So with the death of the illusion of death, and in this instance time, all that remains is the realisation that there is no death. Our true and real self is eternal in nature. Our essence is eternal in nature. Our source is eternal in nature. We are not real in the past, we are not yet in the future the only time we are our true self is in the powerful present moment which is eternal in nature also. It is always the present moment.

So when you think about Tolle’s quote above, the easiest way to understand his idea is to live for today – truly live for today, squeeze as much out of it as possible... and even more powerfully, remember to live for the Now!

Happy Manifesting!

Hi Julieanne,

Thank you for sharing this wonderful post. Upon reading, I stop to think about the deeper meaning. Living in the present, in the Now, is so important. We can create our reality (our potential) through manifesting, but there is certainly no 'time' like the present.

Hi Mysticle!

Thank you :) It does bring a new meaning to there is no time like the present :)

Hi Julieanne

It is indeed ego and pride which created all disharmony in this world. We grew up to be better, to compete and thereafter lose all compassion. Hurts and disillusion will fester and generate either greater ego or hurts.

How humbling it was for me when my son at 5 years was in the Intensive care unit. He had Leukemia treatable but unfortunately there was internal bleeding. I remember sitting at the cafeteria and telling my dad that I could not bear to see my son suffer. If God wills to take my son from me, so be it. We all came from him anyway.

In that instant, I felt my whole body consumed by nothingness. I could not feel the cold air blowing, I could hear the noise around me, nor could I hear my father speaking to me. I felt good. I did not know what it was (I was told by my priest that it was the Holy Spirit) but if I had died and went heaven, and felt this way. I am ok with it.

My son passed away an hour later. But I was at peace; I knew he had gone to a better place.

And somehow from that time on, I felt that death belonged to everyone equally. No matter how great, rich, powerful you were. When you are up it’s all the same.

So I started treating everyone the same. Be it the CEO of a company, be it the cleaning lady.

When these barriers were broken down, their true self began to shine through. So why live your life in the now, being someone you're not.

Hi Julieanne,

Nice post as always. :)

Gaia, so sorry to read about your son. What a beautiful post, thanks so much for sharing this with all of us. Coincidentally, I just finished reading; My Sister's Keeper. Have you read the book? It is also about a child born with Leukemia.

Basically, we are all born to die. No? Sure. It is the way of the ego, To keep us in fear. Some of us escape the fear becuase we see what death is, or is not.
:)

Julieanne, I have changed to Wordpress, I will email you the new feed url. So sorry about the long absence, summer is like that around here. (although I have been keeping up with posts through rss)

Hi I am responding to Lydia.

thanks for your kind words. I will check out that book, but sometimes i try not to read or watch too many of such. I cry too easily and need tons of tissues. Even while watching ER.

Cheers to all and have a great weekend

Beautiful post indeed. In my opinion life is all about living each day as it is. Hope you are well and had a great weekend. Look forward to you blogging again soon. Take care :)

Hi Gaia,

Ahh you sound like me, doesnt take much for the tears to start. A simple commercial will do.

I didn't mean to imply that you should read that book, it would be much too emotionally raw am sure. I was just saying how co-incidence happens.

Yet Tolle does teach us to confront all emotions and...tell them you do not fear them ;)

Have a great night!

Hi Gaia,

Thank you for sharing that beautiful story with me. It is so healing to find peace in this way. 'Death belongs to everyone' has been written about in so many different ways. Something beautiful and poetic that caused a change for you.

Whatever you perceive in another is strengthened in you, so equality is such a powerful perception from a spiritual point of view.

Thank you again Gaia.

Blessings,

Julieanne

(And apologies to everyone for delayed response as I have been moving home)

A lovely post full of truth...

Dying to the ego means dying to separation and being born in the unity and fullness of the eternal present moment. Here (and Now) we are alive and free... and truly Ourselves!

Many times I say to myself 'let it go' (to problems), be prepared to loose it(sthg of value), think of the worst case scenario and accept it and that means 'die before you die' so that you live in the moment instead of worrying about tomorrow.
